adventures in geekdom

Beowulf

so, my british literature class is reading beowulf right now (ugh). we'd been reading it for a while - maybe a week - before one of my more tech-savvy kids raised his hand to clarify beowulf's origin:

student: "did you just say that beowulf's a geek?"
teacher: "what?"
student: "beowulf's a geek? really?"
teacher(laugh): "GEAT. somebody from geatland. not geek."
entire class discussion: pause while every student turns to look at other student and teacher
student: "oh. cause that'd be really cool. beowulf with a pocket protector and buck teeth, running around trying to catch people with a calculator."
the conversation digressed from there.

List-y Girl

in other news (for those of you who check to see that i'm alive by reading the blog):
  1. my current favorite songs are "nasty girl" and "sweet home alabama" (the rap remix) AND the song with the great cadence - whatever that is, since i don't actually know the melody or lyrics, only the rhythm
  2. my current favorite reads are in the middle (atwell) - but only because it's better than most of the crap i have to read for class - and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (because i actually enjoy it)
  3. boy news: none. period. and i'm okay with that, which concerns me a bit.
  4. family news: getting to the point where i only want to slit my wrists during my baby brother's band practices (3 times a week), so that's good news
  5. school news: it's actually going okay. i'm not going to say any more or it might break.
  6. health and body news: two things. one, i'm considering getting the lap-band procedure. two, i cut my hair. that's all.

off to vote my the lesser evil.
