browncoats update

my apologies to those of you who emailed me to inquire about my blogging-related negligence as of late. i've been in mourning until this morning. i recently discovered firefly, joss whedon's "space western" TV series - cancelled by Fox after something like 9 episodes, despite its whedonesque brilliance and beauty. here's my question: how is it that fox will create a reality-TV network but will not keep quality shows on the air? they've cancelled that 70s show twice, and the fact that they let firefly slip through does not speak well of them. at least bart & lisa are still around. oh, but the news, the news. firefly is being revisited - this time as serenity, a film to be released on april 22, 2005. YAY! (insert happy dance here)

so, that's been my personal life recently - watching hours of firefly DVDs. the rest of my time has been spent in the classroom and in school-related meetings. here's the scoop:

  1. work is good. rumor has it that my certification has come in, so i can actually teach on friday. in addition, i'll get my first check on friday. don't know exactly how that works (since i will have officially only been working for two days), but i'm all for it.
  2. in addition to the high-school general "i am the english department" (and department head by default), i've also been hired as an adjunct faculty member at our local community college. so far, this hasn't been a whole lot more than a faculty parking pass (which i thought was pretty damn cool), meetings, and some paperwork. however, i've been assured that next semester, i'll have the option of teaching an english class or two to the college kiddies.
  3. as part of being an adjunct faculty member, i have been told that i should take an upper-level rhetoric class. so... the "take graduate classes while teaching numerous preps and sponsoring two student groups" tradition will continue this semester. i wouldn't want things to get boring (or actually have a minute to breathe)...
  4. the past weekend was bliss. my retirement check from MS came in, so i feel super-wealthy right now (the fact that i say "super-wealthy" probably means that it's a perception issue and not actual reality). i immediately rushed out to change my oil, have my hair cut, get contacts and new glasses, arrange to have a CD-player/satellite radio installed in the car, and set an appointment to have my tailpipe replaced. none of this by itself is exciting, but the fact that i've been dirt-poor for the past two years and can finally not only pay my bills but also make actual purchases is SO FREAKING COOL.
  5. final update. the laptop. still MIA. dirty bastards. it's been over six months now. i'm still trying to figure odds on whether or not i'll get it back.
watch for upcoming news about a gentile visit to an orthodox jewish wedding (coming soon!).
