just another crazy-ass day in the delta...
#1 interesting thing that happened:
got in argument with wenchy librarian over policy that principal/department head put into place. went straight to department head, babysat her kids through a test and a partial firedrill while she sorted things out. MUST the librarian continue to treat me with disrespect? i seriously restructured my english 3 research paper just so they didn't have to be near her (and so i, in turn, could also stay away).
#2 interesting thing that happened:
hollared at a kid for using the word "faggot" while insulting his peer. growl.
#3 interesting thing that happened (big drama):
cool, intelligent, formerly highly-drugged (illegal, mostly, then some legal) student told his story to the rest of the class. story included how he would smoke up 7-8 times a day, but now he's clean and sometimes he looks around (after playing with his nephew, going to church and taking a nap) and he's on a natural high because he's "living life." fucking awesome. the kids applauded after he was done. and i can't figure out if they were serious or not, but the more i get to know this kid as he cleans out his system, the more i respect him. he's so, so brave sometimes. the class reminded themselves of the "what is brought up in this room stays in this room" rule. it's cool to see them starting to trust one another, even across the cliques. i love my seniors.
#4 interesting thing that happened (stick with me, this is the most interesting one):
had a FIGHT break out in my classroom today over CHIPS & SODA (and a CD player). the fight included the following:
- the throwing of a three-ring hole puncher at one of my students' heads
- a wild child stripped down to his pants and tennis shoes, desperately trying to get back into the class to get at the girl who got his CD player taken away so that she could get her chips back
- wild child hitting (according to rumor) the football coach to get loose and run back at my door
- the subsequent TACKLING of that child by the football coach who came back to get him - about a foot away from my head (funniest/scariest thing i've ever seen in my life)
- the rest and repair of the students who helped to break up the fight
my principal has a habit of saying that a good teacher can see a fight coming. dude, i totally could, EXCEPT that i didn't predict that the children would be ballsy enough to start it while security was in the room with me. that takes real nerve. they were so upset. it broke my heart.
