from the bookshelf:
was reading a good book called raising fences the other day (while waiting in the long, long line at walmart on a friday night - come ON, people, don't you have a better time to do your grocery shopping???), and it offered a really interesting perspective on growing up as a black male. as somebody who is neither black nor male, it was fascinating. it's a love story, of sorts, a true story about identity and race and family. since it only took me about 20 minutes to get through the line, i only got a few chapters in (and since i'm poor i couldn't justify buying it at the time), but i'll update you when i finish it. maybe next time i visit walmart.
one book that i'm revisiting, as of laundry-time today, is manifesta. it's a few years old, but relevant, definitely. it made me miss our consciousness-raising group at truman and my feminist bookclub back in peoria. sigh. maybe next year, we can get some kind of book club going.
other books that i'm reading (YES, i'm an addict, i know):
black white and jewish (by alice walker's daughter)
possession (a.s. byatt)
sula (for my english 3 kids)
to kill a mockingbird (for my english 4 kids)
random smut (mind-candy for the wicked)
musical flavor(s) of the month:
